After returning from training in Europe in 1981 John and Rosemary O'Connor bought their first land on Gimblett Road and lived on the establishing vineyard with their 2 young children in a small garage. They now own 63 hectares of vineyard on the old Ngaruroro riverbed that stretches from Gimblett Road through to their winery on Kirkwood Road. The unpredictable river patterns have produced a unique mosaic of soil types that John carefully analyzed, sculptured to individual plots and then matched to an appropriate classic grape variety. In 1997, John and Rosemary established the brand "Matariki" named after the Maori legend surrounding the cluster of stars that herald in the New Year and provide guidance for the growing season. Recognizing that each seasonal journey is a process of stewardship Matariki, through the craft of blending, produces a range of quality polished wines that have quickly achieved international acclaim.
