Kim Goldwater/Nikolai St. George | Kim and Jeanette Goldwater pioneered winegrowing on Waiheke Island when in 1978 they established the island's first vinifera vineyard. This enterprising venture was successful is confirmed by the International acclaim for their wines and the fact that there are now some 30 vineyards planted on Waiheke, making winegrowing and the associated tourism the island's most important industry.
This has caused phenomenal price increases for suitable vineyard land which, ironically, has threatened the future expansion of this activity. Consequently, the Goldwater's have had to look further afield for expansion propositions. This led them to establish a production base in Marlborough in 1992 where they produce Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from 40ha of vineyard, and also Hawke's Bay in 1999 to produce Merlot and associated red blends. In 2001 they will be planting 8.1ha of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah on the highly esteemed Gimblett Gravels, sourcing the Merlot and Cabernet vines from their outstanding Waiheke island vineyards.
