Dark Horse Vineyard is a family boutique vineyard located on the stony soils of Mere Road, Gimblett Gravels Wine growing region, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.

The dream for Dark Horse Vineyard began 26 years ago by the Lyons Family who purchased land in what was part of an old riverbed, an area now known as the Gimblett Gravels.  Over the years that followed exceptional red wines were produced and viticultural techniques polished.  From this the love of viticulture was installed, but it was the next generation of Lyons’s who pursued purchasing land next to the old block in 2005, when Dark Horse Vineyard was finally borne.

The vineyard lies on gravels, near the base of Fernhill and not far from the current river.  The aspect of the site ensures that Dark Horse grapes are intense and the resulting wines beautifully structured.

Dark Horse Vineyard’s philosophy is to produce handcrafted wines that reflect the quality of the estate’s site.  The vines are grown sustainably to ensure longevity of the environment.  The vineyard is managed passionately to the highest standards and all work on the vineyard is by hand.  Minimal intervention and traditional European winemaking techniques are used to produce naturally made wines .
